Word opens but immediately "has to close"

I have been using word 2000 SR-1 on this computer for 18
months, without a problem. However in the last 3 days
every time I try to open Word it opens and freezes, and
then says word has encountered a problem and must close.

I have repaired it , deleted it, re-loaded it even cursed
it, nothing seems to help.

I have updated and run the AV program (Norman AV) and it
says there are no viruses.

I'm stuck, can anyone help with this,please?

Reinstalling rarely helps, and Norton is often the cause of the problem. See
