I keep getting the following error:

Visual C++ Runtime Library

Assertion failed!

Program:...Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE 11\WINWORD.EXE
File: .\scoring.cpp
Line: 133

Expression: ret

Any ideas on what is going on? This is my work computer, I am a small
business owner, and work has stopped until this is fixed. Thanks!

The error message is caused by Dorland's or Spellex medical
spellcheckers in combination with Service Pack 2 for Office 2003.
Dorland's and Spellex have released updates to their
spellcheckers to make them work properly with Office 2003 SP2.
To continue working in the meantime, turn off the Dorland's or
Spellex medical spellchecker in Word by clicking on Tools |
Options | Spelling & Grammar | Speller type: Normal | OK.

Thank you so much for the information. I emailed Spellex and they send me a
patch for the problem.... We'll see how it goes.

This is good information because I am having the same problem but I did what
you said but I don't have a speller type button to change to normal, I am
running word 2003, with sp2

How do we get the updates? I just installed this on my computer and was
getting the same error message. After removing Medical to Normal - it is
gone, but I really need the medical spell check.

Did you check on the Dorland's or Spellex website?

I am having the same problems.  Am unable to find the sites you are referring
to (googled Dorland -have their medical spellchecker-).  Would someone be
able to tell me how they got the updates; I run a business from home also and
really need the spellchecker to be able to work.

Thanks!

Just an FYI, this problem whihc relates directly to Service Pack 2 was
corrected over 2 years ago so if you are experiencing this issue it's because
you are using an older version of Spellex or Dorlands.  There is a patch
however, as someone eluded to, and I have included the necessary information
below:

***** Be sure to close ALL Microsoft programs prior to proceeding *****

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Office 2003 Service Pack 2 Fix:
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

1.    Select the "Save" option when downloading and not "Open" or "Run from
Current Location" as these options will cause the installation to fail.

2.    You will be asked where you would like to save the file. We suggest
you download the file to your Desktop which will create an icon there.

3.    Once the download has completed, simply double click on the new icon
on your Desktop

4.    When the "WinZip Self-Extractor" window appears, select the "UnZip"
button

5.    You will receive a message that says "1 file(s) unzipped successfully"

- If you receive the message "Cannot create output file" then your security
and permissions settings are too high to overwrite files in the Program Files
or any sub folders.

- Instead, after following Step 3, change the path listed on the "WinZip
Self-Extractor" window to your Desktop by clicking on the "Browse" button.

- Once the (Mssp3Spx.DLL) file has been extracted to your Desktop, manually
copy the file and paste it in the following folder: C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF.
