how do you turn word pad documents to word 97 documents

I work up a document in Word 97 and then save as word document but it saves
it as a wordpad document. I have tried saving as other documents and it will
only save as word pad document. Help

Sounds like your default file association for DOC is WordPad. Right-click
any DOC file and choose Open With (if you have Win98, you'll have to hold
the shift key down while you right-click to get the Open With option), and
choose Word, and tell it to "always use this...".

Alternatively, do the following:

Click the Start button on the task bar, and then click Run. Type

  winword /r

and press Enter. This should restore the correct file associations.
