Sounds like your default file association for DOC is WordPad. Right-click
any DOC file and choose Open With (if you have Win98, you'll have to hold
the shift key down while you right-click to get the Open With option), and
choose Word, and tell it to "always use this...".

Alternatively, do the following:
Click the Start button on the task bar, and then click Run. Type
winword /r
and press Enter. This should restore the correct file associations.
