"Check spelling and grammar as you type" are checked on.  Dictionary is
CUSTOM.DIC  When I check my test message which is "This is a tast of our
spalling cheker.   Help with the tesst, it ain’t workin." it indicates that
my spelling and grammar check is complete.  Appreciate suggestions on how to
fix.

What version of Word is this? Select the text and choose Tools, Language,
Set Language (exact steps depend on which version of Word you're using). Is
English set as the language for the text you typed? Make sure that "Do not
check spelling or grammar" is not checked.
