I am running Windows XP SP2 with all MS security patches installed. I have
recently started experiencing a problem printing in Word 2003 which internet
searches have shown is affecting some other users.

When I select File>Print, there is a long delay before the print dialog
appears and when I click Print I get the following error: "The printer has
not yet responded, but the Microsoft Office program may be able to proceed
without printer information.
Do you want to continue to wait for the printer?"

I have 6 printers installed (one local) and I have a default printer set.
Word 2003 is the only application to have a problem. All other applications,
including Office 2003 applications like Excel and Visio have no problem at
all.

Is this related to a recent MS patch? Is there a way of fixing it?

The difference is that Word interrogates the printer driver extensively as
it uses printer metrics to layout the document page. Every printer uses
different metrics. The usual reason for your problem is that Word cannot see
the printer. Does this happen if you select the local printer as default and
print to it? Check that the network printer AND driver are fully accessible
to Word.
