Well, I wasn't expecting Format/Font, etc to actually correct the
problem - more of question for diagnosis - but hey, glad it worked!

I am having the same problem but with the Shading button on the toolbar. I
can only shade selected text or cells in a table if I use the format menu
because the shading is disabled on the toolbar. I suspect another MS bug but
others aren't having the problem "yet"...at least at my office.
Using the method below doesn't work. We have defragged the hard drive,
cleared out temp files, detected and repaired word, etc. I have tried all
options under tools, options to see if it was a setting.
Really frustrating to think about object and MS knowing they must have used
separate objects...one that works and one that doesn't for the palette.
The palette shows up for font color, but not for shading.
