I have a Word 2003 document that has syntax like this:
Jack's letter to Jill had words ("Text") and she liked it.
When I open the .doc in 2007 it looks correct. If I save it in 2007 (.docx)
format it saves correctly and prints correctly.
However, if I down-save it to 97/2003, .doc, and then open the document in
Word 2003, the sentence comes out like this:
Jack=s letter to Jill had words (AText@) and she liked it.
So, Word 2003 changes the " (quotes) that follows the ( (left parenthesis)
to A (capital A), changes the " (quotes) before the ) (right parenthesis) to
@ (at sign), and changes the ' (apostrophe) to = (equals sign).
And here's the weird part. If I open it up in Word 2007, it reads correctly.
However, any down-saving or conversion by Word 2007 (.doc, .html, .rft,
etc.), when Word 2003 or a web browser opens it, it comes out weird like
above.
Any ideas?

It suggests that Word 2003 does not recognise the curly quotes
(smartquotes). Try using a different font set - say Arial - and see if that
works correctly.
If not, I'd suspect one of the systems is using incorrect International
coding. Check that the settings in the Control panel, regional settings.
