Word 2007 corrupted doc and saved as Rescue.asd - Unreadable

Worked all day yesterday on an important document. Finally went to close and
save it, and Word 2007 announced the file name was no longer available due to
some unspecified problem but it would save it as "rescue.asd" and retrieve it
when re-opening.  Rescue.asd would not open - says it's "corrupt".

The original file (I had bean saving as I went) seems to have been removed
from the system leaving only the ~$filename document vestige (1kb filesize)
that always seems to be around whenever a document is open.  Rescue.asd is
64kb so may include all my carefully crafted words...

But how can I get that open? Are there any crashed document utilities?

My computer checks out alright -although when I ran Office 2007 diagnostics
after this occurrence, the system downloaded one update it said it thought
might help.

I've lost 12 hours work, and I'm desperate.

Hi Chris,

If Word doesn't open the *.asd file, I'd first make a backup copy.
Then try to open it in WordPad, which you'll probably have installed anyway
(in the Windows "Accessories" group), or maybe the OpenOffice Writer or
another program that can open Word files.

If that doesn't work, you can change the file type in Word's "File > Open"
dialog to "Recover text from any file (*.*)".
That should get you the raw, unformatted text... better than nothing.

Good luck,
Klaus

Klaus.  That's briliant.  Recovered ALL the text - which was the result of
all those hours of thought.  Can be reformatted in a few minutes. Thanks so
much for that thought. Sehr gut getan!

Any ideas why this might have happened? Is it a common occurrence with
Office 2007?

I'd certainly hope not! But it's still 2003 here, and I don't remember any
*.asd file that could not be opened.
The message you got sounds like something I have seen when saving to
removable media (bad idea), or a network connection that failed.

Hi,

I have read the problems described above.I think you can try a utility
called Advanced Word Repair to repair your Word document. It works
rather well for my corrupt Word documents. Its web address is
