Thanks for your persistence. I did reinstall the driver. Also, tonight I ran
a check with HP online to see if the printer driver was the most current
version. It is. Do you have another suggestion?

Does the printing issue only occur in Word? Have you tried printing a test
page from your printer?

Is this a laser or inkjet printer? Any possibility that the toner or ink
cartridge could be the issue?

It is wise to completely remove a printer driver before installing/re-installing

Good news and bad news: the good news: The problem appears to be solved.
Apparently, I had two faulty HP inkjet black ink cartridges, so a change from
the first to the second only continued the problem. Puttting in a third new
cartridge produced print documents that were fine quality. The bad news: I
wasted some of your time. Thanks to all three of you for making the effort.

As unlikely as it was (especially to have *two* faulty cartridges), I have
to say this is what it sounded like to me from the beginning. Did you use
the HP utility to "clean" the cartridges? That might have helped.

When you mentioned you replaced the printer the thought crossed my mind that
you may have used the same ink cartridges too but then thought, "nah". <g>
Thanks for the follow-up. :-)
