Date in a template

It's my understanding that using CREATEDATE allows me to have a date
automatically entered in a document, and then holds that date when the
document is printed at a later time.  However, I want to use this in a
template so that each time the template opens, the current date is used and
then when I  "save as" the document the created date will be static.
Thanks for any insight!

What you want will work but I think the part you are missing is that you
create New documents based on your template, not open the template and use
Save As. This way, when the new document is created it will have its own
CreateDate which is what you are looking for.

But even if you use Save As the CREATEDATE will be updated.

Oh yeah, that's true since you are creating a new document. (What was I
thinking?) Thanks for the catch, Suzanne. :-)

Not meant to be interpreted as encouraging people to use Save As, mind you
(but people do, anyway). <g>

LOL

Here's some encouragement for creating a new document based on a template
instead of Save As: the CreateDate field will automatically update when
creating a new document based on the template. You need to manually update
it if you use Save As. (Maybe that will work? ;-) )
