Word 2007 fails to Fax landscape pages.
My document contains 2 sections, the first section is in portrait and the
second section is in lanscape. If I print   the document (in Word) to the fax
printer,  only the first (portrait) section is faxed.
Faxing  this document in PDF or XPS formats is ok.
I use Windows Vista Ultimate
the fax software  is Windows Fax and Scan
how can I print it from Word?
thanks

Are you able to print just the landscape page to your printer? Are you able
to fax just the landscape page?

The answer to both is yes. (my printer prints landscape and the fax sends
landscape only pages).
I can display the sent Fax from "Fax and Scan" sent items. it is obvious
that the problem starts while Word sends the document to the fax driver.
thanks

I'm not absolutely sure why this is happening, but my guess is that you just
cannot print to fax in Landscape orientation. When you are faxing PDF or
XML, effectively you are simply sending portrait pages to the fax - even
though one may be an rotated page, it is still sent as a graphic in
portrait.

I think we can prove the limitation: try sending a single landscape page to
the fax and see if it goes out.

????? has already said that he can fax landscape-only documents. It's the
mixture of portrait and landscape that the fax is choking on.

Missed that!

I wonder then if Word thinks that the fax is a duplex printer and it is the
limitation that kicks in for duplex printing where you cannot mix portrait
and landscape on the same sheet?

I suspect it's a similar limitation, yes, though you can at least work
around the printing "limitation" by changing the section start type.

hi Suzanne and Terry
Reading your discussion I tried various combinations of portrait & landscape.
I found that my Word faxes only the first section (nothing to do with page
direction).
First i thought that the second section was not faxed because it was
landscape, but now i noticed that Word faxes only the first section. I assume
that the fax driver considers the "new section" as "end of document". how
about that?
thanks

That's a good catch. So the next question is if you try printing to fax and
type in the page range in full to see if this tricks it into sending all the
pages correctly. In the Page box you type something like s1p1-s2p1 for your
original sample document with a single page in portrait in the first section
and a single page in landscape for the second section.

hi Terry
Thank you. unfortunately the p1s1-p1s2 did not help with the Portrait
section + landscape  section - the result was an empty page (as in the
expriment i described before).
thank you

hi Suzanne and Terry
Sorry, Correction. the situation is more complex.
I have continued my experiment and here are the results:
1) one landscape section (in short "L") - ok
2) one portrait section (in short "P") - ok
3) P+P - ok
4) P+L - only one blank page was sent
5) L+P - only one blank page was sent
6) P+P+P (three P sections) - ok
7) P+P+L - only the first P section was sent
8) L+P+L - only one blank page was sent
9) L+L+L - ok
10) P+P+L+L - only the first P section was sent

so my previous conclusion (only first section sent) did happend in cases (7)
& (10)

can anybody reproduce the problem? or is it only my system
using Vista + "Fax and Scan" + office 2007 + standard drivers
thank you

Unfortunately, I don't have a way of testing desktop faxing, but my guess is
that it is a limitation of the fax driver rather than Word. I would not
recommend trying alternative Fax utilities until you know they are
definitely compatible. Possibly you may be able to download trial versions.

Meanwhile, I recommend taking the problem to the support site for your
current fax and see if they have any suggestions or remedies. Sometimes just
deselecting background printing has been known to resolve strange printing
anomalies.

Thank you Terry. i'm quite certain that it is the driver. Word uses some
driver to produce a tif file and then sends is to the fax machine. I don't
need to wait for the fax machine, I can just view the tif file.
I'll try to find a better driver.
thank you

I had a similar problem with printing to Adobe Pdf printer.

Problem:
I had a Word 2007 document of about 400 pages. The portrait and landscape
orientations are mixed within this document. Page size if 'Half Letter' a new
format I had set up which is 1/2 a Letter page size.

The landscape pages will not print in landscape format. The pages size
reverts to some form of Letter size and orientation reverts to portrait.

I had a friend use Word 2003 to print the document, after fixing the
orientation to landscape.

Inference:
Word 2007 has a problem with Landscape orientation, that Word 2003 can
handle, when printing to a virtual printer or printer emulation.

Hope someone can fix this.

hello Ben
It looks like the same problem that I have reported.
I tried to ask MS forum in Israel. Eventually MS forum person confirmed that
this was a bug and claimed that he reported it to somebody else in MS
i'm afraid that we will need our 2003 friends.

A single landscape page should fax fine. Also two or more landscape pages
will fax fine. It is mixed orientation that throws the driver. It is similar
when you print to a real printer when you cannot mix orientation on a single
sheet (that is you cannot have portrait on one side and landscape on the
other side of a single sheet).

Hi Reuven,

Several fax software packages and services often uses TIFF files as the basis for the fax.  What result do you get if you install
the optional MS Office 2007 MS Office Document Imaging and MS Office Document Imaging Writer and then print to TIFF format using
that Writer?

What result do you get if you save as Word 97-2003 file first and then, while in compatibility mode in Word 2007 send the file to
fax.

Are these documents that have right to left and left to right mixed content in them?

Hi Reuven. Yes, it does seem to be the same problem, but it also looks like
its is going to take a while to resolve.

Hi Ben,

Are you saying you're having an issue with faxing from Word 2007 SP1 and one with creating PDF files as well?

What PDF printer product and version are you using?  Do you get the same result saving to the MS 'Save as PDF' add-in for Office
2007?

What result do you get printing to the .MDI file format choice using the MS Office 2007 optional install Office Document Imaging &
Imaging Writer virtual printer driver?

Hello Bob,

I had at least one other problem with regard to equations, which I will post
later today.

The 400 page doc I have is at home.

This is my process for handling my printing solutions:
1. I now have two versions of this doc, a 2007 version and a 2003 version.
2. The 2003 version prints all orientations and page sizes correctly, but
the equations are choped off, and are very grainly, and black fonts appear
bluish.
3. The 2007 version prints the equations correctly, but won't handle
landscape at all.
4. I print both files to the Adobe PDF "printer".
5. I then create a third pdf file that is a combination of both by selecting
the good 2007 pages and the good 2003 pages.

I'm using the Adobe solutions from CS2. This gives me the the ability to mix
and match pdf files.

I tried the MS 'save as pdf', if I recall correctly, I get the same
problems. Not sure about the drivers, but did install the huge Office 2007
patch a few weeks ago, but the printing problems persists. Will test this
again tonight to detail what happens, and let you know tomorrow or the day
after.

Will post the equation problems in a separate post today.

Hi Ben,

Thank you for the update. If the Adobe add-ins are older than 8.1 they usually have some problems in Word 2007.

Let us know if you have any better luck going to the MS Office Document Image Writer printer with the .docx file and, if needed,
from there to PDF.

Yes, the graphics that MS Word 2007 produces of the equation items when you downconvert the file type to Word 2003 are  poor
quality.

I tried MS 'Save as PDF'. The 2007 file crashes before I can get the pdf
version. The 2003 file completes, but the 'enchance metafile' 2007 PowerPoint
graphics in this 2003 Word file has black patches in it.
