Why won't my "Save" Option default stick in Word 2007?

Since I share files between 2 computers, one running Word 2003, I want to
save all my Word and Excel files in the 97-2003 format.

This is no problem with Excel.

But with Word, I can't get the Save files in this format: Word 97-2003
Document (*.doc) option to stick as the default.  Every time I reboot my
computer, the first time I use word, the default has returned to the *.docx
format.

Any suggestions?

Probably you are using Adobe Acrobat PDF Writer and the add-in is stopping
Word from saving changes to the global template (normal.dot). Are you able
to change other settings such as the default font or page setup and make
them stick?

The latest Acrobat Update will fix the problem.

Nope.  Just creating new documents in Word.  I changed the default font and
had no problems with that.  Can't remember if I changed any default page
setup settings.

Start regedit.  Navigate to the
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options" registry
key.  Change the DefaultFormat data value to Doc.

A funny thing happened the other day.

I was putting off following your suggestion (hate messing about with my
registry as I once had a very bad experience there), and just changing the
default save in Word after each reboot.

While I was working on a Word document involving a lot of pasting from an
Excel spreadsheet, I lost the scroll function- in Word, Excel and IE7.
Quickly shut down and rebooted, and when I next opened Word, my default save
format was *.doc.  And it's stayed there for the past 2 days.

Go figure.

Doesn't make sense to me either, but it works now, so let's hope it
stays that way.  Thanks for keeping us updated.
