There's a known bug in some versions (including Word 2003, I think) that
sometimes places tabs and indents just a bit "off," but where the default
settings are can in fact be affected by the drawing grid (Draw | Grid on the
Drawing toolbar).

I have turned off Snap objects to grid on the drawing grid toolbar and
this has resolved the problem

You can also override the snap-to-grid option by holding down the Alt key
when you are dragging an object or inserting a tab on the ruler.
