ALT+F9 doesn't work 100%

I could use some help.  Word 2007 just started displaying field codes and
changes in a document that displayed without them up til now.  I used alt F9,
but this did not turn off all field codes.  I changed the document to final
from final showing markup, nad per the KB article, inserted and deleted a
character to make this "stick".  But whenever I re-open the document, field
code/brackets still display. Alt F9 turns off only about 50% of the field
codes.  Wierd.  Any ideas? Thanks

XE and TC fields are formatted as Hidden and are not affected by Alt+F9 but
rather by Show/Hide ¶.

It's really very unintuitive. Even though it's "by design," it feels wrong.

Also annoying that "Show hidden text" occasionally is toggled on
automatically...
Which means that the "Show all" (¶) toggle then doesn't work as expected any
more.

I think "Hidden text" gets toggled on when you insert XE or TC fields.

Yes, assuming that you make use of the Mark Index Entry or Mark Table of
Contents Entry dialog boxes; it won't be turned on automatically if you add
the field code directly, which obviously can be confusing.

Suzanne, in the previous version of Word 2003, it was simple to turn off a
document's field codes by Tools>Options>View tab>deselect Field Codes. Now in
Word 2007 I need a way to instruct my users on how to globally and
permanently (not on by default) turn off Field Codes. How?

If field codes are not displayed when you close Word, they should not be
displayed when you open Word. Alt+F9 toggles the display. But if you're
asking where this control is in Word 2007, go to Office Button | Word
Options | Advanced | Show document content: Show field codes instead of
their values. You want this box to be unchecked.

Also, note that Word sometimes gets confused if multiple documents are open
when you change the setting. Therefore, it might be a good idea to close all
documents but one before hiding field codes.
