Can't access any documents

When attemting to access any word document or access word.
The egg timer appears and then the screen freezer. The
only way to shutdown is to turn of mains. Any Info?

My system has also started doing that. I spent all day
diagnosing the problem to no avail. Suzanne, I sure hope
that you have a solution to this.  
I wonder... can the freezeup be related to having Norton
antivirus and Norton Firewall?
