Word 2000 Closes

I am using Word 2000 on XP Home Edition. When I try to
open new or existing word document, the page will come up
for 8-10 seconds and then I get an error message. The
message indicates that MS Word for Windows has
encountered a problem and needs to close. This problem
just started. Any ideas on how to repair/fix.
