When I open a blank Word file i get an error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to
close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  This happens
every time.

Also, when I receive emails from certain senders Outlook
Express will close upon clicking to read the email. When
I reopen the program the same thing happens yet I can
read other emails. These aren't spam messages.  I've
lightened up my options but that did not help.

I've run Spybot and it did not find anything.

Give this a try:
Click on Start -> Run, type in "winword /a" (without the
quotes) and hit OK or Enter.  If Word opens without the
error, then you probably just have some startup item
causing the problem.  Give this article a look over (this
solves MANY issues like this in Word):
(For Word 2000)

(For Word 2002)

HTH!
