I tried to open a 4MB file with graphics. Application
closes. RAM in my computer is 506MB
Windows 2000, Office 2000 pro.
It opens on other computers.
What to do?

I can open the program and read all other files. This
specific file causes the word.exe to crash. The document
opens 2/3 of the volume and crashes. How do I allocate
more memory to word?

Hi Nira,

It almost certainly hasn't got anything to do with memory, at least if
you're using Word on a PC, or Mac OS X.

Usually, I'd suspect a corruption. But if the file opens fine on other PCs,
and you suspect the graphics, you might try to de-install and re-install the
graphics filters.
You can probably find them in the setup under "Office shared features >
Converters and filters".

Other options would be to split up the file into several files on another
machine to pinpoint the offending graphic (assuming a picture is responsible
for the crashes).

Or make it as easy as possible on your Word ("Placeholders for graphics" in
"Tools > Options > View", Normal view, disable the background spell
checker...), and try if Word then opens the file.
If it does, immediately save it in HTML format, and re-open it. Then save in
*.doc format again. This sometimes fixes problems in the file format.

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm for more tips on
fixing corrupted docs.

Regards,
Klaus
