Footnote problem in Word 2003

I am using Word 2003 (part of Office 2003), and when I
try to insert a footnote, using
Insert\Reference\Footnote, the footnote dialog box
doesn't come up. I get a non-superscripted number where
the cursor was located, but no footnote pane shows up
(even in normal view). Any suggestions?

This sounds like normal.dot or registry corruption to me. See if any of the
solutions provided here help (same kinds of problems can cause Word not to
open):

Herb, you're a gem. It was a normal.dot problem. I
followed the instructions provided on the link and it
works great. How do templates get corrupted??

Exposure to politicians, usually.

But, seriously... Nobody seems to know. We've had this problem--corruption
of Normal.dot--since the first version of WinWord back when Lincoln was
President (or, at least it seems that long ago).
