This sounds like normal.dot or registry corruption to me. See if any of the
solutions provided here help (same kinds of problems can cause Word not to
open):

Herb, you're a gem. It was a normal.dot problem. I
followed the instructions provided on the link and it
works great. How do templates get corrupted??

Exposure to politicians, usually.
But, seriously... Nobody seems to know. We've had this problem--corruption
of Normal.dot--since the first version of WinWord back when Lincoln was
President (or, at least it seems that long ago).
