It thinks that parts of my documents are in French. Why is this and how can
I correct it.

Kay,

CTRL+a (select all).  Tools>Language>Set Language and click on English or
whatever language you want to use.

Assuming that parts of your documents are NOT in French, try
turning off "Automatic language detection":

Tools > Language > Set language

And uncheck the [] Detect language automatically option.
