When I open Word, new file or existing file, an extra
instance of Word appears in the taskbar. Clicking it
sometimes does nothing, sometimes displays a blank Word
area. Closing Word closes everything normally. Any advice
as to how I can get rid of this blank instance?

Thanks to all.

Does your monitor have dual monitor support?

If so then you may be encountering the same problem described in this
thread:

I found the problem, and it was the Matrox display driver.
I uninstalled that video card driver, ran Word once under
standard VGA, then reinstalled the driver. Problem solved.
p.s. yes, I run 2 analog monitors.
