Does anyone know how I might convert a scanned text
document to Word, so that I can edit.  The document seems
to scan as an object with the text inside, and I can't
edit at all.

You need to use OCR software (Optical Character Recognition) to
convert the scanned image to text. There are several good products
available.... a limited version is usually packaged with scanners. If
you don't have one look into the products offered at Wayne Fulton's
web site at www.scantips.com. I use Omnipage Pro and his price is
about the best I've found.
