I teach Word classes and have run into students who are
trying to open WordPerfect files through Word, but getting
junk. I seem to remember having to get Microsoft to send
me a disk with a conversion filter on it when I was
converting from WordPerfect 6 to Word 6 in the old days.
Is this still the case?

Thanks!

Office 97 thru Office 2003 CDs include a text converter for WordPerfect
6.x for Windows files, but I don't think it is automatically installed
in a "typical" installation.  WordPerfect 6.x thru 12 for Windows share
the same basic file format, but the converter does not support features
introduced in later versions.  If the converter is installed, then in
Word if you click on File | Open, in the "Files of type" dropdown menu,
there should be a choice for WordPerfect 6.x.  If it is not there, then
you can install the converter by clicking on Start | Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs | Microsoft Office | Change.
