I have several old txt files that I have tried to open in Word XP I get
numerous little boxes outlined in black like this: .

How do I get rid of this little buggers?

Thanks,

Hi,

I assumed the document became corrupted. This is a normal behavior when you
move documents to newer version's of Word.

I recommend to recreate the documents with the new version of Word.

Hi CR,

In "Tools > Options > General", set the option to always confirm the
conversion when opening a file.

If you now open one of the text files, Word will ask you what format it is
(choose "Encoded text"), and you should get a dialog in which you can
specify the code page that was used for the text file.
The dialog also has a preview window.
If neither "Windows text" nor "MS DOS text" does the trick, check "other
encoding" and scan through the offered code pages until you find one that
shows the text correctly.

Regards,
Klaus
