Preserving formatting in a file inserted using Insert File command

We're using the Insert File command to insert an .mht file that contains
text formatted with paragraph and character styles that are defined within
the .mht file. Immediately after the insertion, the inserted text is
displayed with the correct formatting, and the imported styles appear in
Word's Styles and Formatting Task Pane and Organizer. However, the text
reverts to Normal, and the styles are no longer available once the document
is saved and re-opened.

I have tried performing the insertion with the "Automatically update
document styles" checkbox checked and unchecked (in case the styles were
being overwritten). I have also tried renaming the styles in the .mht file in
case they conflicted with existing style names. None of this has resolved the
issue. The "Normal" style in the .mht file and the document into which the
file is being inserted both use Palatino 10 as the font. The other styles are
typically based on Normal, but employ different fonts and alignment.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Darryl R.

Upon further analysis, we discovered that one of the global templates we are
using contained code to remove and replace the styles in question.
Apparently, the removal worked fine, but the replacement wasn't working
properly.
