Can Word 2003 and 2007 live on the same computer?

Is it possible to install both Word 2003 and 2007 on the same computer? For
me, this would be the ideal way of migrating my work to the new version of
Word. By the way, I am sorry that my question does not exactly meet the
criteria for this newsgroup, but I wasn't sure where to post it. Thanks!

Yes - best to have 2003 installeed first, then install 2007 but choose the
option not to have it as an upgrade. You can only have one version of
Outlook and that should be 2007. See also

As a PS to Graham's words-

If you are in the habit of opening documents by clicking on the file name of
the document, it will open in the version of the application that you last
used. I recall that there is a registry change/patch that modifies that
behavior but forget the details.

When you start a version different that the one last used, there will be a
delay as a utility makes adjustments in preparation for the proper running
of the application. This is normal.

Office Downloads pages have a "compatibility kit" consisting of file filters
so Office 2007 files can be opened on 2003 when desired. I suspect you will
find that useful from time-to-time.

Perhaps people already know that Word 2007's native file format is
incompatible with earlier versions of Word so it would be necessary to
save any Word 2007 docs in 2003 compatibility mode - if one wanted to
open them with Word 2003, that is! I call this nuisance - but I haven't
got my head round Word 2007 yet!

So I suppose any Word 2003 docs would call Word 2003 and Word 2007 docs
would call Word 2007.

If you want to ensure that other Word users can open your Word files, yes
you can adjust the format Word 2007 customarily uses to Word 2003. You can
also save from Word 2007 in Word 2003 file format by using   Save as...
rather than    Save. Of course, Word 2003 and XP users can install the Word
2007 compatibility kit available from the Office downloads pages of
microsoft.com.

I don't recall whether installing the compatibility kit causes docx file
extension to be assigned to Word 2003. And I am not near a computer that has
Word 2003 installed so I can check.

I believe docx files open Word 2007; doc files open in whichever Word
version you opened last.

The registry details are on the page I quoted.

Graham, thanks much for the info! By the way, my work situation requires
that I use MS-Outlook 2003 because Office 2007 is not supported at my
company yet. Should I let that stop me from keeping both versions of Word on
my computer?

I read your Web page on "Toolbars in Word 2007." Good info! If I understand
it, I need to make this change to the registry even if I have no interest in
modifying the toolbars. The registry change is required just to keep Word
from running excessively slow. Right?

Thanks!

OK, keep Outlook 2003 for the time being. Outlook 2007 is simply better, but
it can wait.
The registry changes stop each version of Word from reconfiguring to reset
the defaults when you start them. Whichever you use last, before the
registry changes, will be the default. You would probably want Word 2003 for
this.
