At the end of the spell check this message displays: (text marked with "do
not check spelling or grammar" was skipped). This only occurs in a single
document, and non others. Is this indeed limiting my check and how do i turn
off the limitation?

Open the document, press Ctrl+A to select all of the text, and click on Tools
| Language | Set Language | <choose your language> | uncheck the "Do not
check spelling or grammar" box | Default | OK.  Then press F7 to rerun
spellcheck.

I am having the same problem for example word did not highlight
"mandatoryy" as being spelled wrong.  I tried your fix, did not help. Word is
sitll not spell checking.  One added note for those investigating the
problem. I normally work on my documents at home in word 2007, but also at
work using word 97.. Maybe there is a problem during the conversion process
that is blocking spell check.

I have this problem all the time with my long document. It is a usermanual
for a software product, running about 450 pages with graphics. I am
constantly finding that spell-checking has turned itself off, even after I
select the whole document and go to Languages and turn it on, as suggested
earlier. I also recently (last few days) noticed that inserting a cross
reference just inserted nothing after I clicked the Insert button. Along
these lines, Word doesn't display my index. I thought I didn't have one but
when I printed the document, it was there.

My first thought is that I am low on memory. My Windows XP machine's Task
Manager says:
Physical Memory (K)
Total 65430
Available 377200 about
System cache 423720

Kernel Memory (K)
Total 54916
Paged 36252
Nonpaged 18688

In the Control Panel, System Properties, Advanced tab, click the Settings
button for Performance, click the Advanced tab there, I have 958 MB for the
total paging file size for all drives (i.e. virtual memory). My computer
properties says for drive C: I have 40 GB free space. ! (Nice computer I
inherited in this job!)

Does anyone have any ideas about why Word 2003 is acting this way? I've
installed the latest SP1 for Office 2003.

I received an error msg. stating that virtual memory was low and to
"increase the size of virtual memory paging files".  I got no help from
Microsoft until I ran across Ella's posting and looked up my memory info.

I have 6300MB on c:drive, total paging for all drives of 384 MB (190MB are
recommended).  Sounds like the sytems(MS 2000 Prof) memory is overtaxed and I
need to add memory.  Am I right?  Do I need a professional to accomplish this?

Hope to hear from you.  Thank you.

From the FAQ:

10. Spell-Check isn't working even though I have it turned on.
Your text may be marked (formatted) to not check spelling
or grammar. Try selecting the entire document (Ctrl-A) and
under Tools > Language > Set Language, uncheck the option
to not check spelling or grammar.
