Is there a way to change default settings for comments in Word?

Such as set the comments on the left side of the page?  Change the word
comment to instruction or something similar?

No. That's up to the reader of the document. You create the comments; but if
you send the document to me, I get to decide whether, how and where to
display them.

As far as I know, the word "Comment" can't be changed.
