I installed the latest verion of XP updates last night and today I can not
open files in Word.  I was directed by Microsoft to update my Office
programs, which I did but I still can not open any files in Word.

Your problem is almost certainly a result of a clash between HP software and
a recent security update (KB908531) to Windows.

See

and  http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165. The message gives clearer
instructions for doing what Microsoft is recommending.
