The page numbering in my word document footer is highlighted and I would like
to remove it. The document is on a common drive and if I access it from a
different computer the page numbers are not highlighted.

Do you mean a grey shaded background?  Tools>Options>View>Field Shading
and select never or when selected.

Is this really highlighting or shading? If the latter, does it disappear if
you set field shading to "None" or "When selected" on the View tab of Tools
| Options?
