I wonder if there is a way to get, when I open Word, to pick from a list of
templates, or a blank word document.  I frequently use the mailing label and
envelope wizard, and it is several clicks to get where I need to be.

You can add a direct link to the Envelopes and Labels dialog to any toolbar.
See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AsgnCmdOrMacroToToolbar.htm. The
command you want is Envelopes and Labels... in the Tools category. It has an
envelope icon.

You can also add direct access to the New dialog. You want the FileNewDialog
command in All Commands. You'll have to change the name from Other... and
add an icon (I use the one from the New button).
