How can I type a letter and use it with many different names & add

I'm trying to use one letter that I typed and then merge it with many
different names and addresses. There is supposed to be some way to create a
thing for example <<Firstname>> and then I'm supposed to be able to merge it
with a table that has all the firstnames and so on. But I can't figure out
how to do that?
