Opening Word 2002 and existing Word files

Within the last two weeks, I have been having trouble opening MS Word.  When
I click on the icon in my program file, the small window that shows who the
program is registered to, quickly appears on the screen , but then it takes
forever (well, maybe not forever, but a heck of a long time.  Maybe 10 or 15
minutes.) before anything else happens.  If I click on an existing Word
document (whether it is .doc, .rtf, etc) it still takes the same amount of
time to open the Word input window.  Even when that does open, I then have to
go to the "file" menu, and click on "open", then locate the file that I want
and click on it.  After that, we are back to a long wait before the document
finally opens.  Should I remove my Word program from my computer and
reinstall it?  I still have my installation CD.

I have other MicroSoft programs installed on my computer (Excel, Publisher,
Outlook, Encarta, Streets and Trips, Picture It) and I have no problem
opening those.
