Getting Started task pane on top

After some fidling by another user word now appears with the getting started
task pane on top horizontally, above the document window, with the online
help on the ledft and the open document on the right. How do I remove this
layout and how did this has happened.

You can move it back.  See the 4 little dots on the left side next to the
green arrow? Grab onto that and move your task pane wherever you want it to
be. To get it back in it's original spot you have to put it to the right of
the scroll bar - you'll know you have it when it shifts into place.
