when i type it erases other words

when i make a mistake in my text and go back to change it e.g put other
words, it deletes following characters. how can i make it so it works
normally, it hasn't always done this?

Hi choco_chic,

You've got Word working in overtype mode. You can toggle this on/off by pressing the <Insert> key.
