In converting ms word 2002 document into .pdf it turns out the table in the
footer and/or autopage numbering (had to remove table and remove frame around
autonumbers) were causing random page breaks, text shifts and page numbers to
repeat randomly. Why would this be?

Sometimes it happens that the precise dimensions of a table and a frame in a
page footer are such that they clash and strange layout effects can occur. I
suppose it could be considered a bug but it can usually be stopped by
experimentally making some slight adjustments to the width of either the
table, the frame, or the footer itself.
