In MS Word 2003, is there a way to clear the styles Pull Down Menu (NOT the
styles pane) of unwanted extraneous styles?

Not really , the Styles drop down will display what you see in the task
pane.

From the bottom of the styles task pane you can set which styles you wish to
display from a variety of options, including 'Custom'. The styles drop down
list reflects the setting you set in the task pane.
