I need to set up a document to be used as a template.
I have created the document and saved it as a '.dot'. I have gone into each
'style' and changed it so that it doesn't have 'normal.dot' as its base. I
have also unchecked the "automatically update" box.
However, when other individuals open this document and 'save as' to their
drive with a new name, when they make something bold, it 'bolds' everything;
if they center a line, it centers everything, if they use bullet formatting,
it does everything in bullets, etc. This happens consistently to everyone
that uses the document. We have to be sure to 'undo automatic formatting'
every time something is formatted.
How can we stop it from doing that?

Turn off the "Automatically update" option in every style. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm.

If you really did turn off "Automatically update" for all of the paragraph
styles that you are using, obviously what you are describing shouldn't happen
(see also
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/wholedocumentreformattedcontent.htm). In
other words, either you forgot to turn it off for some of the styles or the
document is damaged somehow.
If you suspect that the document is damaged, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm.
