I would like to create a text box where I can limit the number of characters
that would go in that box and if possible keep a running total of how many
characters are left to be used...any ideas? If I can't do this in Word, can I
do it in Publisher?

This is not possible in Word or Publisher. It might be possible in InfoPath.

It could be done with a userform (a custom dialog programmed in VBA). The
programming isn't trivial, but an experienced programmer could put it together
in about a half hour.

To pursue this further, post the question with as much detail about the document
as possible in the userform newsgroup,
