Sometime when working on a big document with many different styles a little
square will appear to the left of the left margin.  Any idea what causes this
little square to appear?

The small square appears on a paragraph that has one or more of the following
settings in  Tools > Paragraph > Line and Page Breaks tab turned _on_:

Keep with next
Keep lines together
Page break before
Suppress line numbers

Lene has told you what this specific nonprinting character signifies. For
the meaning of others, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm

Also, if you double-click on the "bullet," Word will open the Paragraph
dialog with the Page and Line Breaks tab displayed.
