You spoke about aliases for the heading styles. Do you mean creating a style
'Based on' the Heading style in the style menu - or are you talking about
another way?

In the Modify Style dialog, you can type an "alias" after the style name, so
that it becomes, say, "Heading 1, H1," and Word will display both. I'm not
sure whether you can add the alias before the built-in name (to affect sort
order), but you could try it.

Seems like alias only happens after the main name - but it might be useful
still.
