I have an embedded index in Word 2003 that I can't view. When I place my
cursor after the section break following the references and hit INSERT > REF
> INDEX, I am asked if I want to replace an existing (totally invisible to
me) index. If I say yes, Word repaginates and I end up (again) with visible
text ending on page 960 (the last of the references), followed by about 30
blank pages, presumably where my index is. What settings should I have to see
this index? Thank you.

Do you have the display of non-printing characters activated?
(Tools/Options/View)
Do you see anything different if you view the document in Print Preview?
Have you checked whether this text has been formatted as "Hidden" or with a very
small font size?
