Why do my pictures in footers sometimes show as boxes with a cros.

I am creating a mail merge template with a header and footer. In my
template, the pictures in the footer look fine, but when I do the merge some
of the pictures are replaced by boxes with a cross in them. Can anyone tell
me how to get the pictures to show, please?
