I'm trying to write an outline for something, and I've gone to format and
chosen the outline style I want.  The first line shows the number, but after
I type and press enter, the next line does not continue in the outline format
(i.e. no number, no letter, no indent, no nothing).  I can use the drop-down
menu at the top to select the outline level I want, but I know that before it
automatically did it when I pressed enter.  I also checked autoformat and all
the built-in autonumbering, etc. boxes are checked. How can I fix this?

If you press Enter immediately after a number (the paragraph is empty), Word
assumes you don't want it numbered. Type at least a space before pressing
Enter, and you will get another number. OTOH, if you are using Word's
built-in heading styles, then the "Style for following paragraph" is Normal.

It happens when I type something as well.  For example in the first line, the
number appears '1)' and I type so that it reads '1) Introduction' and press
enter and nothing appears in the second line.

Is the numbered paragraph in a heading style?
