for some reason, the key always looks like this: `x with the accent mark that
will not go away. Present in all applications. How do I revert back to normal?

Are you saying that when you type in Word, every time you press the 'x' key
the result is "`x"?

If so, can you place a cursor between the acent mark and x?

If so, after you type an 'x' can you click Ctrl+z? Did the acent go away?

If this is the case, then someone has added an autocorrection. To correct
the problem, go to your autocorrect menu (Tools -> Autocorrect). Scroll down
the list of corrections until you see x & `x, and click on delete.
