Well, that may explain things :-) You should be able to
"ADD" a dictionary in that dialog box. If you do that, are
you able to add words to it?
Of course, losing one's custom.dic isn't any fun, either.
If you search your drive for *.dic do you turn anything up?
And if you browse to this location from the above-mentioned
dialog box, are you able to pick it up and use it again?

I was able to creat a custom.dic, and it allows me to add
new spellings. I guess I'm still confused about the
inability to find the "standard" dictionary that I assume
must exist (else what would Word use to spell check?).
But, as the problem is solved, I'm O.K. with the results.

The "standard" dictionary is not one file but several and
their names have the extensions ".dll" and ".lex". You can't
edit or change the contents of these files (so far as I
know).
