I've come upon a problem in my copy of Word 2000 (I don't
think this has been happening in the past). During a
spell check, the program will stop on a word, but NOT
allow me to add it if I wish. I'm using the default
dictionary, but can't seem to locate it anywhere. I know
I can set the program to ignore words, but I used to be
able to add them. Any ideas?

Are you using the F7 dialog box? Or the right-click with the
mouse? Is the button "greyed-out"?

What language is the text formatted with?

What language is assigned to your custom.dic? Note that
custom dictionaries are managed in Tools/Options/Spelling
and Grammar/Custom dictionaries. This is where you should go
to find out if one exists, where it's located, and what
language (if any) is assigned to it.

Cindy:

I'm using a right-click on an underlined (by the spee-
check) word. The Add button is gray-ed out, and when I
open the dictionary dialog in tools, it doesn't locate a
dictionary at all.

Well, that may explain things :-) You should be able to
"ADD" a dictionary in that dialog box. If you do that, are
you able to add words to it?

Of course, losing one's custom.dic isn't any fun, either.
If you search your drive for *.dic do you turn anything up?
And if you browse to this location from the above-mentioned
dialog box, are you able to pick it up and use it again?

I was able to creat a custom.dic, and it allows me to add
new spellings. I guess I'm still confused about the
inability to find the "standard" dictionary that I assume
must exist (else what would Word use to spell check?).
But, as the problem is solved, I'm O.K. with the results.
Thanks much for your help.

The "standard" dictionary is not one file but several and
their names have the extensions ".dll" and ".lex". You can't
edit or change the contents of these files (so far as I
know).
