I am having trouble with the tools > language > set language > "Do Not
Check Spelling or Grammar" box in Word 2003.  It just won't stay
unchecked.  I keep selecting all text, unchecking the box.  But,
obvious spelling errors remain unchecked in random parts of the text.
Please help!

The first thought that occurs to me is that this text may be formatted
with a language not activated on your machine. If you click in such a
skipped word:
   - When you look in the Status Bar at the bottom of the Word window,
which language is named (just to the left of the little "book")?

   - Is there any chance you may have once chosen "Ignore" for these
terms in this document? If so, then going to Tools/Options/Spelling and
Grammar and clicking "Recheck" might help.

Aloha Jessica, Cindy, et al,

I am using Word 2002, Sp3, and am having exactly the same problem with "Text
marked 'Do not check....'", and it's a real nuisance. I have narrowed it down
to the footer, where I have inserted the FILENAME. I use
Insert/Field/FileName to do this. I've even tried setting up a Character
Style for just this area of the footer. No matter how many times I uncheck
the "Do not check..." box in Language (and the only language I installed is
English), Word always resets the text to Do not check. Doing
Tools/Options/Spelling & Grammar/Recheck Document has no effect. Doing
Tools/Language/Set Language also has no effect.

This problem is 100% consistent.

Any help you have on this would be much appreciated.

Mahalol nui!

Aloha Jessica, Cindy, et al,

I am using Word 2002 SP3, and am having exactly the same problem as Jessica
describes. It is, frankly, a real nuisance. I've narrowed it down to the
Footer, where I have inserted the filename using Insert/Field/FileName. I've
even tried setting up a Character Style for this area of the footer. No
matter how many times I highlight that text and uncheck the "Do not check
spelling or grammar" box, Word always sets it back. Tools/Options/Spelling &
Grammar/Recheck Document has no effect. Tools/Language/Set Language has no
effect.

This problem is 100% consistent.

Any assistance you have would be very greatly appreciated.

Mahalo nui!

Hi =?Utf-8?B?UmljayBWLg==?=,

Ah, OK, this one I recognize :-) Thanks for being specific about the problem
occurring with a field. Yes, field results are almost always formatted as "no
proofing". As soon as a field is updated, any language formatting you've
applied is lost. Mostly, I run across this complaint in the mail merge
newsgroups. On my website, in the mail merge FAQ, you should find an article
about retaining language formatting during mail merge. The technique described
(nesting the field in a Quote field) should work for any field type.

You may need to work with the field codes directly: use Alt+F9 to turn them on
and off. And to insert a new field around an existing field:
   Select the existing field
Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field brackets
Type in the field name and anything else required

Cindy,

Excellent answer. Your fix worked perfectly. It's a little tricky to make
sure you get everything in the right place within the field (and IMHO highly
unnecessary to have to do it in the first place), but your work-around is
great. Seeing as I'm using this in my NORMAL.DOT

Seeing as I'm using this in my NORMAL.DOT, it's going to help out in
everything I do in Word.

Thanks a bunch. Take care. Malama pono.
