Comprehensive speller for Word 2000?

Hi,

I'm in the medical transcription business. Way back in the Word97 days,
there was a comprehensive speller, containing fancy legal and medical words,
that could be installed in place of the standard Word speller. It was
produced by a company called Alki Software, which I gather is no longer in
business. Question: Is there a comparable comprehensive speller available
today which would work with Word2000? Thanks.

It was actually produced by us and marketed through Alki.  Unfortunately, we
do not have a version for Word 2000 and beyond.

Thanks, Doug. Do  you have any info on what specialized spellers are used
nowadays in lieu of the old comprehensive speller, particularly in the
medical field? Surely, my need can't be exactly unique! Thanks again.

Hi Gretchen,

The big kahuna of electronic medical dictionaries is Stedman's, but
there are plenty of others. Have a look at these search results:

Wow! Thanks, Jay. That was most helpful - especially the link, via Google,
to

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010483191033.aspx
"Customize the Word Dictionary for Medical Terms"

So it seems that the electronic Stedman's integrates quite smoothly into
Word. Am I right in saying, then, that Word can consult more than one custom
dictionary during spell check - for example, Stedman's in addition to my own
Custom.dic?

Thanks again. You guys are good!

That is correct. And Word is the only Office application (currently) that can
do so.

If you look in Tools/Options/Spelling and Grammar/Custom dictionaries you can
see a list of loaded *.dic files. I think 10 is the top number you can have
loaded at one time. Suggestions will be made from all that are loaded; but new
words will be added only to the one at the top of the list.

Hello Cindy,

Sorry. I just now accidentally replied to you, rather than the group. What I
said was...

Thank you very much! I've gone ahead and ordered the Stedman's. You folks
here are great!
