Hi. My spell checker and grammar checker have stopped working. Word says that
I need the files msspell3.dll and msgr...dll. I have the files in my original
CD but don't know how to install them. I have tried repairing the
installation but even though I have done this several times, the checkers
still don't work. Thank you for your help. If I have to reinstall Word and
Office, will I lose all my documents if I don't back them up first or does it
just save a copy and I'll have it back as it was?

Uninstalling or reinstalling Word will not do anything to your
documents. This does not change the fact that making backups of your
data is vital.

Thanks, I think I'll do it.

"msgr...dll"?  It would help if you quoted the error message
EXACTLY.  Your interpretation of your vague recollection of what
the error message might have said in part can be confusing.  It
would also help if you said what version of Word you have.

I don't think uninstalling and reinstalling will help in this
case.  It is more likely that Word thinks the text of your
document is a different language than what you think it is.  Open
the document that has this problem, press Ctrl+A to select all of
the text, click on Tools | Language | Set Language | <choose your
language> | uncheck the "Detect language automatically" and "Do
not check spelling or grammar" boxes | Default | OK.  Then press
F7 to rerun spelling and grammar checks.

The error message is "Word cannot find the spelling file msspell3.dll or
mssp232.dll". followed by "Word cannot find the grammar file mssgr??32.dll"
The version of Word I am running is Office 2000. These error messages come up
after I run a spelling and grammar check and the usual squiggly lines that
come up when there is a spelling and grammar mistake is missing. I don't run
Word in a different language and this has never happened before. I will try
to do what you said though. Thank you for the help.

I did what garfield-n-odie said and the same error messages that I mentioned
in the last post still popped up. Thank you for all your help.

The "msgr??32.dll" part of the error message suggests that my
diagnosis is correct.  Maybe you didn't press Ctrl+A to select
all of the text before applying the language formatting?  Or if
you have text in a header or footer, then that text is not
selected when you press Ctrl+A, so open the header or footer and
apply the language formatting to the header or footer text, close
the header or footer, and then rerun spellcheck.
