I would like Word to tell me if I accidently put more than
one space between words.  It checks for wrong spacing
between sentences, but not between words.

Ed,

Your version of Word?  Not sure about earlier versions, but extra spacing
between words is identified with "Check Grammar As You Type" in Word2003.

As an alternative, you could do a search and replace for errant double space
between words.  Use Edit>Replace>More>Use Wildcards.

Type ([0-9A-z]spacespace (meaning two taps on the spacebar) in the find what
field and
\1space in the replace with field.  This should catch most of your errors.
